Ways to Get Rid of Tonsil Stones Hurting the Throat

Tonsil stones are small, off-white color waste found in the back of your throat. They can cause difficulties such as inflamed and red tonsils, painful swallowing, and bad breath.

Here are some home remedies that will help you get rid of tonsil stones.

1. Use cotton swabs

This simple method will require a cotton swab, a toothbrush, a mirror, a flashlight and running water. First, locate your tonsil stones in your mouth with the help of a mirror and flashlight. Then, open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue. Wet the cotton swab and poke the stones gently to dislocate and pull it out. Afterward, rinse your mouth thoroughly to make sure you have removed all the stones.

2. Use an oral irrigator

Oral irrigators are useful in flushing tonsil stones out, but use it at the lowest setting. After putting it inside your mouth and switching it on, direct the water stream towards the stone. Do not change its position until the stone gets dislocated.

3. Use mouthwash to gargle

Gargle with an alcohol-free mouthwash after eating to get rid of tonsil stones. This will dislocate food from tonsil craters and prevent the formation of tonsil stones. You can also use warm salt water for gargling as it removes bits of food from the tonsil craters and also reduces the discomfort due to tonsillitis.

4. Gargling using apple cider vinegar

Another method to get rid of tonsil stones is gargling with diluted apple cider vinegar. Doing this three times a day will help in breaking down the tonsil stones and loosening them. However, apple cider may cause tooth decay and digestive problems in some people.

5. Use essential oils

Essential oils, such as myrrh oil and lemongrass oil also help reduce tonsil stones as these oils have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. For this, dilute the essential oil in a carrier oil, put 1-2 drops on a toothbrush, and then brush the stones.

6. Use a toothbrush

You can also try to pull out the tonsil stones by brushing them with the backside of a toothbrush. However, gargle with warm salt water after this to prevent any possible bacterial infection. You should also brush your tongue often to reduce the excessive amount of bacteria in the mouth. It prevents the formation of future tonsil stones.

7. Eat yogurt

Eating yogurt is beneficial to prevent tonsil stones as yogurt contains lactobacillus acidophilus and other helpful probiotics that help get rid of the bacteria in our mouth.

8. Chew carrots

Eating carrots increases saliva production which helps in reducing tonsil stones.

9. Take antibiotics

If you suffer from severe and persistent tonsil stones, try taking antibiotics after consulting your doctor. Antibiotics can easily treat tonsil stones, but will not prevent the formation of tonsil stones.

10. Laser treatment

Laser resurfacing is also a treatment option for tonsil stones since laser treatment can remove the tissues with tonsil. However, since this method involves certain risks, always consult with a doctor before opting for it.

11. Seek medical attention

If you have stubborn tonsil stones which do not respond to the above treatments, you and your doctor may consider a tonsillectomy.

Practicing good oral habits help prevent tonsil stones. Be sure to brush and floss regularly.
