Gum Shield vs. Mouthguard vs. Night Guard

A gum shield is just another name for a sports mouthguard — both cushion impact during sports. A night guard is different: it protects your teeth from grinding and clenching while you sleep.

This is a refreshed take on our earlier post, gum shield vs. mouthguard vs. night guard.

Is a gum shield the same as a mouthguard?

Usually, yes. “Gum shield” is the term common in the UK and Europe for what many in the U.S. call a sports mouthguard. Both cushion impact and protect your teeth and gums during sports, and both come in ready-made, boil-and-bite, or custom-made forms.

What makes a night guard different?

A night guard protects your teeth from the grinding and clenching (bruxism) that happens during sleep. It's built to handle repeated biting forces over time, rather than sudden impact, and is often made from a denser material than a sports guard.

Signs you may need a night guard

  • Waking up with a sore or tight jaw
  • Grinding or clenching your teeth at night
  • Worn, flattened, or chipped teeth
  • Frequent morning headaches or jaw pain

Can one guard do both jobs?

No. Sports guards are made to absorb sudden impact; night guards are made to handle grinding over time. If you need protection for both, you'll need a separate guard for each.

Frequently asked questions

Is a gum shield the same as a mouthguard?

Generally, yes — “gum shield” is mostly a UK/European term for a sports mouthguard. Both cushion impact and protect your teeth and gums during sports.

What's the difference between a mouthguard and a night guard?

A sports mouthguard (or gum shield) cushions sudden impact during sports; a night guard protects against grinding and clenching during sleep. They're built for different kinds of force.

Can I use a sports mouthguard as a night guard?

It's not recommended. The two are designed for different forces, so you'll get better protection and comfort from a guard made for the job. If you need both, use a separate one for each.

How do I know if I need a night guard?

Signs include waking with a sore jaw, morning headaches, or worn or chipped teeth. Your dentist can check for grinding and recommend whether a night guard would help.
