Six Ways to Protect Your Gums

Your gums are the unsung heroes of your oral health. When your gums are healthy, your teeth can be healthy.

Why You Should Protect Your Gums

Your gums form a seal that protects your teeth from harmful bacteria. If you develop gum disease, you could experience inflammation, irritation, bleeding, chronic bad breath, and loose, broken, or missing teeth. Gum disease progresses at a slow and painless rate. It starts as gingivitis, a condition that occurs when plaque builds up on the soft tissue. When left untreated, gingivitis can develop into periodontitis, an infection that occurs when plaque and tartar buildup extends below your gum line.Gum health affects other parts of your body, too. People with gum disease could be at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, acute bronchitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

How to Protect Your Gums

Because gum disease can progress slowly, you may not notice it until you’ve developed gingivitis or periodontitis. The good news is that you can prevent and reverse gum disease.

  1. Brush Your Teeth Properly

Proper brushing can remove food and plaque from between your teeth and around your gums. To maximize the effectiveness of teeth brushing, move your soft-bristle toothbrush in short, gentle strokes at a 45-degree angle toward your gums. Brush all the surfaces of your teeth at least twice a day or after every meal. Remember to replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles fray.

  1. Use the Right Toothpaste

Complement your proper brushing technique with the right toothpaste. It should display an ADA seal of approval on the package and contain fluoride.

  1. Floss Daily

The buildup of food and plaque between your teeth and around your gums is the leading cause of gum disease. Floss at least once a day to clean and protect your teeth and gums.

  1. Rinse with Mouthwash

A therapeutic mouthwash protects your gums. Look for the ADA seal on the package as you choose a mouthwash that can remove food, reduce plaque and prevent gum disease. Keep in mind that mouthwash does not replace brushing and flossing, and it’s not recommended for children under six.

  1. Stop Smoking

Smoking can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to gum disease. Stop smoking to protect your gums and improve your oral and overall health.

  1. Schedule Regular Dental Checkups

Dental checkups are an invaluable asset that protects your gums. Rely on professional cleanings to remove harmful plaque and tartar. Your dentist will also inspect your gums and can identify early signs of gingivitis, periodontitis, or gum disease. With early detection, you can take steps that prevent more severe gum problems in the future.
