Small changes to the shape of your teeth or gumline can make a big difference in how balanced your smile looks. Tooth contouring reshapes small areas of enamel; gum reshaping adjusts the gumline. They can be done separately or together.
This is a refreshed take on our earlier guide, dental contouring and gum reshaping.
What is tooth contouring?
Also called enamel shaping, tooth contouring is when your dentist smooths or reshapes small areas of a tooth to fix minor chips, uneven edges, or slight differences in shape. It's quick and usually needs little to no downtime. Because enamel doesn't grow back, your dentist will confirm it's right for your teeth first.
What is gum reshaping?
Gum reshaping evens out the gumline — helpful for a gummy smile, uneven gums, or teeth that look shorter than they are. Your dentist numbs the area, then uses a laser or small tool to sculpt the gum tissue. It needs a little healing time.
Why combine the two?
Done together, contouring and gum reshaping can create a more symmetrical, balanced smile and improve the tooth-to-gum ratio — often in fewer appointments than doing them separately.
Are you a good candidate?
You may be a fit if you have small chips or uneven edges, an uneven gumline or excess gum tissue, and generally healthy teeth and gums. An exam is the way to know for sure.
Does insurance cover it?
If it's purely cosmetic, usually not. If a gum procedure is medically necessary or part of another treatment (like prepping a tooth for a crown), your plan may cover part of it — worth asking before you book.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between tooth contouring and gum reshaping?
Tooth contouring reshapes small areas of enamel to fix chips or uneven edges; gum reshaping adjusts the gumline itself. They address different parts of your smile and can be combined.
Is tooth contouring permanent?
Yes — enamel doesn't grow back, so contouring is permanent. Your dentist removes only a small amount and confirms it's appropriate before starting.
Does gum reshaping hurt?
Your dentist numbs the area first, so the procedure itself is comfortable. Afterward, your gums may feel tender or swollen for a week or two as they heal.
Is tooth or gum reshaping covered by insurance?
Cosmetic reshaping usually isn't covered. A gum procedure that's medically necessary or part of other treatment may be partially covered — ask your plan before booking.
